Pre-Prep Reflections Week 27 2024

Dear parents,

We have had a busy full week back at school and it has definitely been a bit of an adjustment for everyone, but hopefully we will all be back in the swing of things next week. It was great to catch up with some of you at my coffee morning on Monday.

Key Stage 1 Trips

On Tuesday, Years 1 and 2 went on a joint RE trip. As part of their learning on Christian places of worship, they visited St Martin’s Church in Cathedral Close, one of the oldest buildings in Exeter. They then walked over to Exeter Cathedral, where they had a guided tour and enjoyed identifying and comparing the different features of the two buildings. Thank you to Miss Lawrence and Ms Richards for organising and leading this trip, and to Mrs Goodwill and Mrs Titchin for accompanying them. Yesterday, Year 1 went on a short walk around the village of Exminster as part of their new geography topic on the local area.

Whole School Theatre Trip

This afternoon, after a picnic lunch, the whole school travelled up to Taunton by coach and minibus to watch The Lion Inside at the Brewhouse Theatre. This was a new musical stage adaptation based on the best-selling book, telling the heart-warming story of a shy little mouse who sets out on a journey to find his roar, only to discover that even the smallest creatures can have the heart of a lion. The children hugely enjoyed the performance and behaved impeccably throughout. As you can imagine, it is a huge undertaking to take 70 children aged 3-7 to the theatre! Many thanks to all the staff for their help and to our chair of governors, Mrs Helen Clark, for accompanying us on the trip.

School uniform

On Tuesday, Exeter School had a visit from Schoolblazer, our new uniform supplier, who came to meet with parents in a focus group and talk about the proposed changes to the school uniform.  This was an extremely helpful discussion about a number of aspects of uniform in general and looked at some proposed changes to our uniform.  We invited a wide range of parents, from across the whole school, and had good representation present in the meeting.  We feel that our current uniform has not been changed for many years (probably since girls joined the school two decades ago) and with the current suppliers struggling to meet demand and offering such poor customer service, it feels the right time and opportunity to update our current offering.   The meeting allowed us to consider the views of parents, and to look at some suggestions.  We have not yet made any firm decisions, and we know that any changes to the uniform must take into account a range of factors; every school is unique, and we have to think about this when considering change and of course cost.  What we want is for pupils to be proud of their school, and to wear their uniform smartly and with confidence.  These will be the key things that we are looking to engender in any new uniform items.

Spotlight on Year 2

We have had a very busy week in Year 2. The highlight of the week was our RE trip on Tuesday with Year 1. We visited St Martin’s Church and Exeter Cathedral, where the children had to spot certain objects and identify similarities and differences between the two places of worship. The trip was very informative and we were proud of the children for their intelligent observations and excellent behaviour. In geography, we have started our ‘beside the seaside’ topic, where we have looked at the location of different seaside resorts in the UK, including local resorts like Dawlish Warren, and the different features we might expect to find there. We have also linked this to our work in English through the books of Simon James, many of which have a sea theme. ‘Creating digital music’ is our topic in computing for this half term and we have started to experiment with the Chrome Music Lab on the iPads to compose our own individual pieces of music. In science, we are enjoying our topic on plants, and have planted five lots of seeds in different conditions to try and establish what is necessary for a plant to germinate and grow healthily. In mathematics this week, our focus has been on adding two and three-digit numbers and we have introduced the children to column addition. We are looking forward to another busy, fun and productive final term together.

Name labels

Now that the weather is getting warmer, the children are shedding layers of clothing throughout the day in various places around the school. Please could we ask parents to check that all items are clearly labelled with your child’s name so that they can be returned to them easily. We currently have some new items of clothing which are unnamed and unclaimed. Thank you for your support.
