Pre-Prep Reflections Week 18 January 2025

Dear parents.

Happy Lunar New Year! As we reach the end of January in what is now ‘the year of the snake’ in many Asian families, the germs have really started to come out in full force and we have sadly had a number of children and staff off sick. We wish all those who are still poorly a speedy recovery.

Chickenpox

We have had multiple cases of chickenpox in Years 1 and 2 this week. Please see the NHS guidance for further information on the symptoms to look out for. Children with chickenpox should remain off school until all their spots have crusted over – this usually takes around five days from the first spots appearing. Please let us know if your child has chickenpox or any of the related symptoms (high temperature, aches and pains, loss of appetite or generally feeling unwell).

IAPS district meetings

On Wednesday, I spent the morning at Wellington Prep School with other pre-prep heads from across the south west who are members of the Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS). We meet once a term to discuss a range of topics and to have a tour of the host school. This is always a great way to share good practice and refresh our ideas. Yesterday, Mrs Van and I also attended this term’s meeting of IAPS prep school heads, which took place online.

7+ assessment morning

Well done to our Year 2 children who took part in the 7+ assessments for Exeter School this morning. Please do not worry if your child was absent due to illness – we will arrange a second assessment date for this group of children as soon as we know that everyone is well enough to return to school.

Strategic planning

As part of our rolling strategic planning, the board and members of the leadership group will be working on strategy later this term. In order to hear the views of parents, we will be sending out a questionnaire on Monday 3 February, which should only take a few minutes of your time. Please look out for this and we look forward to hearing your views. Following this, on Tuesday 11 February there will be a parent forum giving you the opportunity to contribute to this through a facilitated discussion. Details of this will be included within the email sending you the questionnaire link on Monday. We appreciate your contributions as we plan for the future together.

Next week

Every day next week we will be celebrating children’s mental health week. Mrs Lawrence-Jones will be exploring this year’s ‘know yourself, grow yourself’ theme with each class in their wellbeing lesson, while class teachers will be reading stories with a mental health focus every day. We will also be heading out on our ever-popular wellbeing walks, where we do a daily lap of the grounds after lunch as a whole school.

Wishing you all a restful and restorative weekend.

Mr Daniel Ayling

Captain Elizabeth Godwin – Life Guards Squadron

Captain Elizabeth Godwin was born in Devon and attended Exeter School from the age of 7 – 15. She graduated from King’s College London, qualifying as a Nurse in 2015. Whilst at university Captain Godwin commissioned into the Reserves and captained the 1st XI Hockey team.

Captain Godwin commissioned from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst as the first female officer in the Life Guards, The Household Cavalry, since the regiment formed in 1661. She was also awarded the Sword of Honour as the best cadet in her intake.

Captain Godwin will share her experiences and give a first-hand insight into her career to date. She will explore nationally significant events as well as her day-to-day responsibilities as the leader of Sqn 2iC, which include running the Life Guards squadron of 60 soldiers and 100 Military Working Horses.

Spotlight on Nursery

In literacy, our story of the week has been Whatever Next by Jill Murphy. The children have worked really hard practising segmenting, blending or writing some CVC words relating to the story. We have had lots of fun designing and creating some rockets and even had our very own picnic on the moon! In mathematics, we have been developing our understanding of numbers to 30, practising our 1:1 correspondence, counting one object at a time, saying numbers in order and understanding that the last number we say is the total amount. In PE, we were able to retell our story of the week, pretending to be Baby Bear, putting on our space boots, packing our bag and blasting off into space! We moved our bodies like rockets, waving to the passengers in the aeroplane passing by and landing on the moon. Our topic this term is Light and Dark. We have discussed how the dark makes us feel and were able to complete a night and day sorting activity where the children showed their understanding of the topic beautifully. We are very proud of how hard the children are continuing to work; they are all doing so well!

Spare clothes

We are running low on spare uniform items in school for when children need to change clothes, such as when they have had a toileting accident. If you have any unwanted socks, underwear or uniform items that you would like to donate to the school for this purpose, we would be very happy to receive them. We do ask that all children, particularly younger pupils, have a change of clothes in a bag on their peg should they need it. If your child comes home in spare uniform items, we would be really grateful if you could wash and return them as soon as possible. Thank you for your support.
