One of our art scholars, Anna K (L5), reflects on her experience at this week’s workshop with James Lake.
On Monday 17 March, the art scholars had an incredible opportunity to work alongside cardboard artist James Lake in a workshop where he taught us how to make cardboard shoes. James Lake led the session, introducing us on how to manipulate the cardboard to work for us. His work focuses on transforming ordinary cardboard into extraordinary, life-sized sculptures; ranging from animals to intricate architectural models. During the workshop, James shared insights into his artistic journey and the techniques he uses to bring cardboard to life, all while telling us its sustainability and eco-friendly nature. Throughout the session, we learned various methods of working with cardboard, starting with basic cutting and folding techniques and advancing to more complex structural forms. We were encouraged to experiment with different shapes and forms, allowing room for creativity. James told us that mistakes are a natural part of the creative process, encouraging us to use the unpredictability of working with cardboard to our advantage. He also took the time to discuss the importance of sustainability in art. By using recycled cardboard, his work challenges the idea of waste and promotes an eco-conscious approach to art-making. James Lake’s workshop was a truly inspiring experience.
