Pre-Prep Reflections Week 23 March 2025

Dear parents,

It has been a busy week as usual and it has been lovely to see some spring sunshine. One of the highlights for me was Thursday’s star of the week lunch in the office. Spring reviews were sent home on Monday and we hope you all enjoyed reading them.

Assemblies

In Monday’s assembly, I introduced British Science Week which is taking place this week and there is more information on this below. It was lovely to see Mrs Van on Tuesday, who joined us for a fun assembly on the topic of honesty. On Wednesday, we talked about the International Day of Mathematics and the children enjoyed a fun quiz.

British Science Week

British Science Week is taking place from 7 to 16 March and the theme is ‘Change and Adapt’. We celebrated this in school with experiments during the week, with each teacher demonstrating a different experiment to all classes. Mrs Dray looked at how adding soap to a bowl of pepper and water can change the water’s surface tension and make the pepper move. Mrs Rickard explored the density of different liquids and showed how objects float and sink. Mrs Lawrence-Jones used skittles and hot water to demonstrate the process of diffusion and show how sugar and food colouring dissolve and spread. I shared an experiment involving soap, milk and food colouring where soap helps to separate the water and fat in the milk and ends with a colour explosion. It was lovely to hear lots of “wows” from the children throughout the week!

Phone lines and internet

The internet and phone line were down on Tuesday morning, so please accept our apologies to anyone who was unable to phone the school before we were able to redirect calls. Hopefully it won’t happen again!

Miss Moore

Our lunchtime assistant, Miss Moore, will be out of school from next week for a planned operation. We will miss her and wish her a speedy recovery. School staff will be helping Mr Heath with the daily lunch service for the next couple of weeks. We look forward to seeing Miss Moore back in school soon.

Next week

Next Wednesday is parents’ evening and we look forward to seeing many of you there. Apologies for any confusion regarding Red Nose Day, which is, in fact, next Friday 21 March. As usual, it is a non-uniform day for all children. The suggested donation for this is £1-2.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.

Spotlight on Nursery

We have had a lovely time in Nursery this week. The children are really enjoying our new topic, ‘On the Farm’. In literacy, our story has been ‘from egg to chicken’, where the children have learned all about the life cycle of a chicken. Using their newly learned knowledge, they were able to sequence the story through the use of pictures. In mathematics, we have been practising our number recognition and recording numbers. Using our number rhymes, the children are working really hard to form numbers correctly. We also went on a number hunt in the playground to support our number recognition. The children have thoroughly enjoyed science week and seeing new science experiments every day; they particularly enjoyed the skittles rainbow experiment. We have been busy getting creative and exploring different resources to design our very own life cycle of a chicken. Nursery have made the most of the lovely weather and have been really enjoying playing and exploring in our outside area.

Upcoming events

Red Nose Day

Next Friday (21 March) is Red Nose Day, which will be a non-uniform day for all children and staff. The suggested donation is £1-2 for the charity, Comic Relief. We will not be selling red noses in school, but children are welcome to bring them in to wear on the day. They are being sold on the Comic Relief website and on Amazon.

Parents’ evening

This term’s parent-teacher meetings are taking place on Wednesday 19 March. Please come to the hall where your child’s class teacher will meet you at your allotted time.

Parent drop-in

All parents are welcome to drop in to classrooms at the slightly earlier time of 3pm on Wednesday 26 March. This is an informal opportunity, held every term, to look at some of your child’s work with them. There is no need to book.

Easter assembly

On the final day of term, Thursday 3 April, we will be running an Easter theme day for the children all day. We warmly invite parents to join us for a special Easter assembly at 3pm in the hall, where the children will be sharing what they have been doing and singing some songs. Again, there is no need to book for this.
