Pre-Prep Reflections Week 11 November 2024

Dear parents,

The Christmas trees are up, the school is echoing with the sound of festive songs, and the decorations are being dusted off in readiness for the start of December! This is a particularly busy time of year with so much going on. Please do take a moment to read through the newsletter so that you don’t miss anything.

Mr Heath

You may be aware that Mr Heath has not been in school this week. He injured his knee at the weekend and is currently suffering with a full leg brace and strong painkillers. We wish him a speedy recovery. In the meantime, Ms AJ and I will be covering one of the buses to and from school between us, as well as the transport for Year 1 and 2 swimming lessons. We now have the bus phone if you need to contact us to amend a booking or let us know you are running late. Please note that the buses depart from Exeter School at 8.10am every morning. Miss Moore and Ms AJ are doing a brilliant job at managing the lunch service between them. Please be aware that this will take Ms AJ out of the office over lunchtime and away from the phone.

Swimming

On Wednesday morning, I drove half of Year 1 over to Exeter School for swimming and had the pleasure of staying to watch their lesson with Mr Dutch. This is the first time I have been able to see the children swim and I was so impressed with their behaviour, independence and understanding of safety rules. They clearly had lots of fun and are proud of the progress they are making each week.

Parents’ evening

It was lovely to see so many parents on Wednesday evening at parents’ evening. We hope you found the meetings useful and came away with a clear idea of how we can work together to support your child with their next steps.

Safeguarding training

On Tuesday, I attended the termly Devon safeguarding forum, a meeting of designated safeguarding leads (DSLs) from schools across the county, which keeps us up to date with training and key changes in child protection and safeguarding, both locally and nationally. Mrs Lawrence-Jones will be out of school next Friday to complete her level 3 refresher training as our Deputy DSL. Ms Richards will be covering her teaching for the day.

Visitors

Earlier this week, I gave a tour of the school to three local estate agents. Don’t worry, the school is not up for sale! This was an opportunity to showcase Exeter Pre-Prep in the hope that they might promote us to potential families moving to the area. They also brought along some Christmas cards for the children to colour in, which we will give out next week.

Jiu Jitsu success

This morning, our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu club leader, James Wood, came in to present promotions to participants during assembly. These ‘stripes’ were added to their belts to indicate the good progress they are making towards their next belt. The children were very proud and those without uniforms were given a special certificate of recognition.

Next week

The Christmas post box will be making its annual appearance from Monday. If your child would like to write Christmas cards for friends and staff, they can be brought in any time up to the end of term. Please ensure that the recipient’s name and class are clearly written on the envelope so that the Year 2 children can deliver them to the right places. On Wednesday, we are excited about holding our very first Pre-Prep Disco! Please do support this Family Society event if you can – further details below.

Have a wonderful weekend and good luck if you’re putting up the tree!

Mr Daniel Ayling

Spotlight on Year 1

We have had a great week in Year 1. In mathematics, we have been continuing our learning about money. We have learnt about the value of different coins and explored various ways to make a given amount. Our English lessons have focused on the story Billy’s Bucket. We enjoyed predicting what could have happened to Billy’s bucket and what could be inside it. In history, the children learnt about the engineer George Stephenson who is known as ‘the father of the railways’. We considered how trains changed people’s lives in the 19th century. The focus in computing has been on digital painting and the children have worked hard using the Sketchbook app to create some wonderful digital artworks on the iPads. In art, the children have been working hard on their Christmas projects, which will be ready to share with parents at the end of term. The focus in DT has been on sewing and the children enjoyed learning how to do a running stitch. They have also spent some time practising their nativity lines ready for the upcoming performances.

Spring Term Clubs

Please click here to book your child’s after school clubs for next term. Clubs will start on the first day of term, Monday 6 January 2025. In order to secure your child’s place, please complete the online form by 4pm on Friday 6 December. Please note that all club bookings are for the full term ahead and that we are not able to offer clubs on a trial basis. Thank you for your understanding.

Pre-Prep Disco

We are looking forward to the Family Society’s Pre-Prep Disco next Wednesday from 3.45-4.45pm. You are welcome to pick up your child at the end of the disco or come and stay for a coffee in the Year 2 classroom – a good opportunity to catch up with fellow parents and kickstart the festive season whilst the children throw some moves on the dance floor! Tickets are £5 per child and can be bought on the new Family Society website: https://esfs.org.uk/. The password is ESFS1633. Please note that you do not need to buy a ticket if you have already paid Sporty Stars for your child to attend multisports club that day. Art club will not be running and Zoe will be in touch regarding her invoices. All children are welcome to bring their disco clothes into school so that they can change at the end of the day in their classrooms.

Parent Drop-in

All parents are warmly invited to join us for the first informal drop-in afternoon of the year. These take place each term and are an opportunity for you to sit with your child while they share some of their recent work with you before they go home or to clubs. The first drop-in will be on Tuesday 10 December from 3.00-3.30pm. Please go directly to your child’s classroom if you are able to join us.

We are aware that this clashes with the Exeter School carol service. Apologies for any inconvenience this has caused. You are more than welcome to come in and view your child’s work with them on a different day if you would like to. Please just contact the class teacher directly to arrange this.

Christmas Festivities

Further to our letter sent to parents today by email, arrangements for the final few days of term are as follows:

  • Tuesday 10 December – The nativity dress rehearsal will be filmed and photographed in the morning. Please ensure costumes have been sent into school in a named bag by Friday 6 December.
  • Wednesday 11 December – All children and staff will enjoy a special Christmas lunch.
  • Thursday 12 and Friday 13 December – Nativity performances will take place in the hall from 2-3.30pm on both days. We will not be allocating seats but ask that parents kindly adhere to the policy of up to four seats per family. These may be used on either day. It would be helpful if individual parents and family members could choose one performance, rather than attending both, as this reduces the seats available for everyone.
  • Monday 16 December – Christmas Jumper Day: all children and staff may come into school wearing a Christmas jumper over their uniform. This is just for fun – no donations necessary. There will be no swimming for Year 2.
  • Tuesday 17 December – The Pantomime Play Company will be coming into school to perform ‘The National Elf Service’ for the whole school in the afternoon.
  • Wednesday 18 December – There will be no swimming for Year 1. Mrs Ruth Lawrence, our Drama Club teacher, will be entertaining the children at their annual Christmas Party in the hall from 10-11am. All children are welcome to come to school in party clothes for the morning. Each child will also receive a Christmas present from Father Christmas.

Please note that we finish early at 12 noon for the end of term on Wednesday 18 December. There will be no lunch or Late Room, but the minibus will be operating a return journey to Exeter School.

There are no after school clubs running in the final week of term (16-18 December). Late Room will be open until 5.30pm on Monday 16 and Tuesday 17 December for those who need after school care.

There will be a charge of £11.00 per child towards the cost of the pantomime, Christmas party and present, which will be added to your next invoice. If your child is in Nursery and you would like them to attend extra sessions in the run up to Christmas, please contact Ms AJ to see if we have spaces available: preprep@exeterschool.org.uk.
