Senior Design Technology

The design technology department aims to instill a mix of traditional skills with modern technologies and rapid prototyping. Pupils interested in design, creativity, engineering and science can combine their passions and make the most of the state-of-the-art facilities..

Equipment is situated across two workshops supported by a computer suite and a computer-aided manufacturing room featuring two 3D printers, a laser cutter and CNC mill alongside the more traditional equipment.

The department runs two popular extra-curricular activities for senior school pupils. In Greenpower, 11 – 16-year-olds are given the opportunity to design and make an electric endurance racing car capable of racing for 1.5 hours without a battery change. As part of the F1 in Schools challenge, teams of pupils research and design an aerodynamically efficient vehicle, which they then race down a 20m track. They also raise sponsorship and build a brand. The teams innovate within a strict set of rules, designing their car using 3D CAD and testing it in a smoke and virtual wind tunnel.

Every summer, the department joins forces with the art department to host an exhibition of DT work showcasing the breadth of talent across the school.
