Beyond the Senior School Curriculum

Exeter School places a strong emphasis on character education, firmly believing that the journey of learning extends far beyond the confines of traditional classrooms and strict timetables. Our commitment to holistic education revolves around instilling values, fostering personal growth, and nurturing well-rounded individuals.

Within the vibrant tapestry of our educational experience, sports, music, art, and drama serve as invaluable tools for character development. These pursuits allow our pupils to cultivate qualities such as discipline, teamwork, creativity, and resilience. They provide opportunities to explore the depths of their passions, unlock their potential, and discover new dimensions of themselves.

While the 40-period academic week forms the foundation of our educational structure, we are passionate about offering abundant opportunities for curriculum enrichment. Our school brims with thriving clubs and activities that operate throughout the year, both in our junior and senior schools. These extracurricular pursuits are designed to nurture the character of our students.

Imagine a typical term filled with clubs that cater to diverse interests – from art, chess, and coding to the Christian Union, dance, and debate. These activities not only broaden horizons but also cultivate virtues like critical thinking, compassion, and dedication. Pupils can explore fields such as design, electronics, and even lifesaving, instilling a sense of responsibility and empathy.

Our Medical Society and Model United Nations clubs inspire leadership and a sense of global citizenship, while photography, reading groups, and sewing encourage creativity and empathy. Scientific exploration thrives in our science clubs, and the imagination soars in our Warhammer club. These clubs, along with the many sporting, musical, and dramatic opportunities available, are an integral part of our character education program.

As pupils progress through the senior school, they are granted greater independence to pursue their unique interests. They can even take on leadership roles within these clubs, helping them develop leadership skills and a sense of responsibility towards their peers.

Furthermore, our commitment to character education extends to the “Friday 8” program. For pupils  in Middle Fifth (Year 10) and above, this programme offers the chance to join the Combined Cadet Force (CCF), promoting qualities like discipline, leadership, and service. Alternatively, they can participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme (DofE), where they learn invaluable life skills through outdoor adventures and community engagement.

In the sixth form, the “Friday 8” program expands its horizons. Students can engage in community service, become sports leaders, contribute to the Exonian magazine editing team, or join the musical group SWUNK. They can also choose to be a part of our community volunteering group, further reinforcing the values of empathy and social responsibility.

At Exeter School, character education is not just a buzzword; it’s a way of life. We believe in nurturing the hearts and minds of our pupils, equipping them with the character, resilience, and values they need to thrive in an ever-changing world.

Our clubs and activities are not merely extracurricular; they are essential pillars of character development that shape the leaders of tomorrow.

Academic Enrichment

At Exeter School education is an exciting and enriching experience, and one of the key sources of this enrichment is having inspiring and highly skilled teachers. We go beyond the usual classroom setup by offering a wide range of opportunities for academic enrichment. These opportunities are open to all students but are specially designed to cater to those who are academically talented and intellectually ambitious.

Our enrichment activities cover a broad spectrum, including lectures, masterclasses, field trips (both day trips and residential), performances, revision sessions, study skills workshops, leadership training, as well as various clubs and societies. These initiatives aim to provide pupils with a well-rounded education that goes beyond textbooks and exams, encouraging them to explore their interests and expand their horizons.

One of the unique aspects of our academic enrichment program is the presence of academic societies like the Crossing Club, Catalyst Club, and Comets Club, which cater to pupils aged 7 to 18. The Catalyst Club is open to pupils from the Third Form to Lower Fifth (Years 7 to 9), while the Crossing Club is for Middle Fifth pupils (Year 10) and above. These clubs organise a wide range of events and activities aimed at challenging pupils, broadening their perspectives, and fostering their creativity and curiosity.
