Careers and volunteering

Exeter School runs a comprehensive careers programme to support our pupils in making those important choices for their life after school.

Alumni are very welcome to help with these activities and we are grateful to all those who currently support us. There are a variety of ways you can get involved as outlined below. We would be pleased to hear from you if the below opportunities are of interest.

Career profiles

We would like to feature alumni profiles across the school, intranet and website. Profiles provide valuable career insights and information on how to enter a wide range of industries. Most importantly, they inspire pupils and show them what Exonians before them have gone on to achieve.

Providing a career profile is one of the simplest ways of supporting careers activities for both pupils and alumni. We are asking alumni to fill out a short form and provide us with a picture.

Time: 15 – 20 mins max.

How: Please complete our online form available here and submit it along with a photo of yourself.

Work experience

Work experience is a vital part of our careers programme. All pupils in the Upper Fifth (Year 11) are asked to arrange a two week work experience placement following their GCSE examinations in June. Sixth Form pupils are also encouraged to arrange work experience placements.

Past pupils supporting and providing work experience opportunities are hugely valuable. If this is something you or your business are able to do, we would love to hear from you.

Time: Work experience takes place for two weeks in June.

How: Contact the Alumni and Development office in the first instance.

Sixth Form interview scheme

Each September, all Upper Sixth pupils take part in our Interview Scheme. The aim is to help pupils to practise good interview techniques, rehearse common questions and gain interview experience.

We need volunteers to help facilitate interviews with pupils and provide feedback. This has proven to be extremely helpful for pupils and without alumni volunteers we would not be able to continue this valuable activity.

Time: Pupils receive two interviews each and the whole session will take half a day to a day here in Exeter.

How: Contact the Alumni and Development office in the first instance.

Alumni career talks

Hearing what our alumni have gone on to do in their careers and life after Exeter School is a great inspiration for pupils. It complements our careers programme, providing insight into different sectors. Your experiences can make a real difference to pupils who are unsure which career path they should take or how to get into your field.

We are open to a wide variety of topics. Talks are delivered across the school year to the Sixth Form, academic departments, clubs, societies and parents.

Recently, alumni career talks have been given to the Medical Society, pupils interested in a career in Engineering and our business and economics pupils, and include topics such as banking and sustainability. We have also had presentations on a canoeing expedition to Ethiopia and the challenge of running the length of South America for wildlife research.

Time: Typically, we would allow 1 – 2 hours for this kind of activity, with a talk and questions taking 20 minutes – 1 hour.

How: Contact the Alumni and Development office in the first instance.

Wintry weather

There is wintry weather in the Exeter area. We understand that some families will experience delays in coming to school. Exeter School remains open but please do not take any risks in travelling to school today.
