Today, the Economics Society held their first debate of the academic year featuring Upper Sixth pupils tackling the motion: “This house believes the government has not done enough to close the gender pay gap.” This event provided an excellent opportunity for students to sharpen their debating skills in preparation for university, while also delving deeply into an important societal issue. Economics Society is pupil-led and aims to gather like-minded pupils to exchange ideas beyond the standard curriculum.
Jasmine and Zac argued in favour of the motion, highlighting the persistent institutional and societal gender biases in the UK. They advocated for more robust measures to close the gender pay gap, citing Sweden’s gender equality as the gold standard.
On the opposing side, Patrick and Nell contended that a free-market, laissez-faire approach is the best way to address the pay gap. They pointed to significant progress already made and warned that government intervention could lead to unintended consequences.
The debate, adjudicated by Toby C and Toby P, took place in front of a packed audience. After a public vote and careful adjudication, Jasmine and Zac were declared the winners.
This engaging debate not only showcased the students’ oratory skills but also their ability to independently investigate and critically analyse complex issues.
