Having won their region, the chess team travelled to Nottingham University last weekend for the English Schools national chess championship final. The final was jam-packed, with five rounds over two days. For each round, players had 50 minutes plus an extra 10 seconds per move. We were very impressed by the team’s performance; by winning a fantastic three out of their five matches, they finished tenth in the country (out of twenty-six teams!) and were also the highest scoring team in our region. What great results!
There has been an strong group of chess players in recent years, culminating in reaching the national final of two competitions this year. Well done to all players who have contributed along the way, from Fourth Form to Upper Sixth! Special mention goes to Pengxiao, Charlie and Toby, who have been particularly strong and have allowed other players to develop around them.
